Starlight Theatre's Bob Rohlf Internship Program offers various internships for college students interested in building theatre or non-theatre related careers. Interning at Starlight Theatre affords students the unique opportunity to work closely with theatre professionals, contribute to the success of Starlight's summer season, and, of course, learn the "ins and outs" of presenting concerts and Broadway shows.


Accounting

The Co-op student will assist in all accounting functions at Starlight Theatre. Typical tasks will include payroll‚ accounts payable‚ daily bank deposits‚ revenue classification‚ and assisting with financial reporting.

Development

The intern will work with the Development Department on fundraising initiatives including the Starlight Annual Fund, benefit Gala and possible capital campaign. Duties will include grant research, special event assistance and event staffing and some graphic design as well as general office and clerical work including mailings, data entry and filing. The student will demonstrate his or her best public relations and communications skills at the theatre by greeting donors at performances‚ private receptions and similar donor-appreciation events.

Education

If selected, you will work with the Director of Education & Outreach and Education Coordinator focusing on educational programming such as the Blue Star Awards Program, Starlight STARS of Tomorrow, Act Like an Animal Camp, and other summer activities that arise, as well as organizational and preparation duties for fall programming. As an ideal candidate, you will have experience working in theatre and in an educational environment, have excellent skills in organization, written and verbal communication, and Microsoft Word and Excel. You should enjoy working with children and students of all ages and excel in customer service since you will be working closely with teaching artists, parents, and other Starlight personnel.

Horticulture

You will work alongside the 2-person grounds team in maintaining the landscape throughout the 16-acre Starlight Theatre campus. As a part of the internship, you will have the opportunity to develop and possibly implement a design concept to enhance an area of the facility. On a daily basis, duties within this internship may include (but are certainly not limited to): Hand watering ; planting and maintenance of gardens; mulching; soil testing; pruning; transplanting; propagation; fertilizing, chemical selection and application; irrigation maintenance and repair; lawn care (mowing, trimming, etc.); and other general green-industry tasks. Other duties may include assisting in scheduling, ordering of supplies, and proper care and maintenance of hand and power tools relevant to the above tasks.

Information Systems

This intern will work with the Information Systems staff to provide computer and networking support for Starlight’s administrative and ticketing operations. Daily activities include providing basic desktop support to Windows users, assisting the IT staff in troubleshooting network issues, and performing routine procedures such as backups and computer maintenance. The ideal candidate will have experience working in a Windows client/server environment and be familiar with Microsoft Office applications.

Marketing - Broadway Emphasis

Duties will include assisting in mass media marketing efforts for the Starlight Broadway series; drafting e-mail copy for Broadway e-blasts; graphic design of selected show collateral; assisting with media pitches, follow-up calls and interviews; coordinating show promotions with sponsors and radio stations; assisting on-site at Broadway shows; delivering and posting show collateral; and assisting with general preparation for Broadway show weeks. The intern will have the opportunity to lead development and execution of at least one special promotion/event in support of Broadway ticket sales.

Marketing - Concert Emphasis

Duties will include assisting the administrative, production and marketing staff in coordinating activities related to Starlight's summer concert series. Specific duties will include coordinating communications with Starlight partners and vendors; assisting in the graphic design, content development and distribution of marketing materials; assisting with planning event-day activities; and assisting in the execution of event-day activities.

Marketing - Group Sales

Duties will include preparing for group sales meetings and assisting/attending sales meetings and pitches; representing Starlight at networking functions, printing sales invoices; preparing ticket packages; creating, faxing and e-mailing group catering menus; sending group marketing materials to prospective customers; and providing inbound and outbound phone support. The intern will also play a key role in administering the e-mail campaign for the Starlight Partners corporate discount program. During show-night group events, the intern will help with greeting group leaders and guests, as well as directing them to on-site dinner locations and backstage tours.

Operations

You will work alongside the Director of Operations & Theatre Plant in all areas of operations at Starlight Theatre's facility. Close coordination with our House Manager will also be a large part of your responsibility. The Director of Operations is ultimately responsible for the Guest experience, and as such this position is exceedingly Guest-oriented. Over the course of the summer, you will be given a prominent role in the day-to-day operations of the Theatre. We will expect of you to take part in: scheduling staff, Guest communication programs, sourcing parts and supplies, coordination with and oversight of all event day divisions (Parking, Food & Beverage, Security, Volunteers, etc.). You will also assist in pre- and post-event scheduling, coordination and oversight, quality control and assurance, management of our seasonal ID system and review of our Emergency Response Plans and Associate training programs. Various additional roles under the umbrella of the Operations and Theatre Plant responsibilities will be required of the successful candidate.

Props and Scenic Art

The Props and Scenic Art Intern is the primary source for collecting, purchasing and building props for Starlight productions and maintaining the visual integrity of scenery on the Starlight stage. This intern will work closely with the Production Manager and the Director and Stage Management during the staging process of a musical. Applicants should have experience as a Props Master or Designer, be very familiar with the Kansas City Metro area, have dependable transportation, and experience in carpentry and scenic painting.

Sound and Technical

The main duties of this internship are to work with the Sound Designer of a Starlight production in planning and implementing the sound equipment and assist in sound effects, work as a wireless mic technician during the run of a musical, set up and run a sound system for the pre-show entertainment, and assist Starlight’s audio specialist with reinforcing national tour productions. Other duties include assisting in the set-up of live club acts, completing sound related errands, and being present in adverse weather to protect equipment. Intern will occasionally perform duties in the lighting and carpentry areas as needed by the Production Manager during national tour productions.
Sound Internship Period (8 weeks): 29 May – 11 June/2 July – 13 August, 2012

Production Management

This intern will assist the Production Manager coordinating and managing national tours and Starlight productions. A Theatre background is required along with management and administrative skills. Some of the activities involved are: Arranging travel for actors and staff, assist with technical elements of produced shows‚ be responsible for finding and purchasing equipment and supplies, oversee expenses and budgets and generate paperwork. This is a fast paced internship with exposure to the many different elements of Starlight Theatre.

Stage Management

This intern will assist in preparation of all rehearsal spaces‚ develop necessary paperwork that is generated by stage management and will assist in other areas of production as well. Applicant must be highly motivated‚ detail oriented‚ possess extensive organization skills and work calmly under pressure along with having real stage management experience.

Lighting

This internship involves working with the Lighting Designer and Master Electrician in planning and executing the design of a Broadway Musical. Duties include hands on training with consoles, learning the lighting system, managing supplies and acquisition, assisting with cue sessions and creating cue sheets and other paperwork. Many evenings are required for this internship.
